Acupuncture is an ancient form of diagnosing, treating and preventing
disease, which encourages the bodys own healing potential. Several
hundred acupuncture points are recognised most of which are located
along channels (meridians) with specific functions.
It is most commonly performed with fine gauge needles (a similar thickness
to dog hair) which puncture the skin, but heat and pressure may also
be used.
The commonly accepted explanation that the actions of the acupuncture increased or decreased the flow of energy (Qi pronounced chi) in meridians, however, recent investigations have suggested that the action is due to release of chemicals in the nervous system, which alter the bodys perception of pain.
Many different techniques may be used to decide on the placement of needles. In veterinary acupuncture a more western approach is used with needles being placed in the affected area and above and below it. If an area is badly damaged or is covered by a bandage points on the opposite side of the body may be used.
The needles are left in place for fifteen minutes and may be stimulated
throughout the treatment by gentle twisting. The placing of the needles
is not painful but a sharp sensation may be felt. Once in place the
needles are painless and some animals may even fall asleep with them
in place.
During treatment most of the needles will loosen in the skin and some
may even work their way out, this is a good sign and can suggest a good
response to the treatment this will be discussed with you at the time
of treatment.
It is not unusual for a long-standing condition to take up to six sessions
to show a significant change.
Additional advice on exercise, hydrotherapy, fitness programs and nutrition
may also be given at the time of treatment to maximise the benefits
of the treatment.
Acupuncture though commonly related with pain relief can be used to assist with:
Stress related conditions
Hip/Elbow Dysplasia
Arthritis
Disc Disease
Strain and sprains
Chronic skin conditions
Acupuncture may only be carried out by a veterinary surgeon, appointments
can be booked with Fran Creaner BVM&S MRCVS as part of a rehabilitation
programme or individually.
